We’re blessed with 24 hours to make things happen. How those 24 hours are spent are up to you and me. Oftentimes, I find myself wishing I had just a few more hours to get some things finished, but I usually save them for the next day. I hate leftover work and I’m always looking for time management tips that work. Seriously, I just want to finish my work so I can get on to the next task and the next until I’m done.
As I struggle with my time management issues, I’ve noticed that many of my Twitter friends are having the same problem. I continually see tweets wishing for more hours in the day and I can relate. Seriously, I always have dozens of tasks left on my daily make-it-happen list when I lie down for bed. It makes me sad…
After much trial and error, I have finally found a time management routine that works for me. As rapper Snoop Dogg said, “It ain’t no fun if the homies can’t have none,†so here are some time management tips that work for me:
I write everything in my notebook. I have a notebook that I write everything in so I don’t forget it. I also use it to keep up with my daily make-it-happen list. Every night before I go to bed, I try to create a list for the next day. This provides me a daily starting point. Also, make sure your notebook can fit into your purse/murse so you never have to leave home without it.
I use digital calendars. I love my Outlook calendar and my BlackBerry calendar. Outlook allows me to put appointments in while I’m on the computer, and my BlackBerry allows me to add appointments when I’m on the go. What I love the most about them is that I’m able to sync my BlackBerry calendar to my Outlook calendar and the same information is on both devices. I can also add tasks and memos if it isn’t convenient to get my notebook out. If you don’t have these two devices, then use Google calendars or Any.do. They also sync to many phones and will text or e-mail you your appointments.
I keep my daily planner updated. Why have a daily planner when I have two other calendars (Blackberry & Google calendar)? Despite having my other calendars, sometimes I get a little Stone Age and IÂ just want to see it on paper. I try to update my planner once daily so that it matches my BlackBerry and Outlook calendars. Additionally, my planner includes a monthly layout and a daily layout broken into hours, 7am to 10pm. This allows me to see where my free time is and helps me to see when my calendar is too full. Besides, what if I leave my phone at home or lose it?
So, here are my time management tips that work for me. My philosophy is that I get the same 24 hours that Beyonce, Jay-Z and Steve Jobs get. Therefore, I’m striving to be great, too! Hopefully, my methods will help you organize your hectic schedule. If you’re trying to create a routine, I suggest you schedule everything. That includes travel time, phone calls to family and friends, date nights and any other events that would typically slip your mind. The goal is to organize your life while maintaining a sense of sanity.
