As a girl, I loved watching sports. My favorites were college and pro basketball along with pro football. Back then I knew nothing about golf. I wasn’t aware of any golf courses in my community, but I really wasn’t checking for any golf courses either. Then Tiger happened. It was the mid-90’s and Tiger was the talk of sports. I would read the sports section of the newspaper to get updates and I eventually started watching him compete in golf tournaments on television. Then I wanted to know what a “birdie†was, a “break†and a “par.†I wanted to know the game and I hit the library and started looking up these terms. I was hooked, almost two decades later and I still love the game and the discipline of the players.
Next week, AT&T will present the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am (Professional-Amateur) Tournament in Pebble Beach, California to raise money for charity. I was amazed to find that this tradition was started by Bing Crosby (hums…I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas…) when he hosted the first National Pro-Amateur Golf Championship in 1937. As a history buff, I love that this tradition of gathering professional and amateur golfers together to give back has survived the times and this year AT&T has invited four die-hard golf fans to the tournament. These fans: Tiffany Fitzgerald of Black Girls Golf, Dan McLaughlin of The Dan Plan, Katie Horsford a First Tee Mentor and Marine veteran, Tim Lang will share first-hand details about the happenings and let us in on what’s going on behind-the-scenes.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll highlight the fans mentioned above because they’re no ordinary fans. These fans have made their own mark in the golf world and as a golf fan, I’m loving it. I can’t wait to tell you more about Tiffany and how she’s introducing more Black women to golf, Katie and how she is helping teen girls build their self-esteem with the game, Dan as he works to accomplish his dream of having a PGA career and Military Veteran Tim Lang as he motivates and encourages us to keep going and never give up.
You can track this campaign using the hashtag #ATTPROAM and follow along as the foursome uses the AT&T Network and HTC devices to document their journey on social media via @BlackGirlsGolf, @TheDanPlan, @KTHorsford and @TimLangGolf. Additionally, you can follow me and other bloggers using the hashtag #ATTBLOGGER as we syndicate the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Tournament on our websites and social media channels.
Head over to the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Tournament website to get more details and check out the golfers. I see that Michael Bolton and Don Cheadle will be on the course. I can’t wait to follow along and cheer for them as they get these dollars for charity. Make sure you’re following along via Twitter at @attproam for live updates, too. As always you can follow me at @notoriousspinks.
